Because it's a science. Trades can happen after the deadline; they just have to be passed up by other teams on the list. Like waivers.

so they have to make the same trade offer to all the other teams in front of them?

It is called getting a player through waivers after the trade deadline. A team will put one of their players on waivers because he longer fits into their longterm plans. It starts with the team with the worst record, but it is unlikely they will claim this player because they are out of the playoff race.
If a team claims a player on waivers, That team and the club who currently has the player will try to work out a trade.

if he's on waviers, why does that team have to do anything? why give up a draft pick or minor league prospect if he is on waviers?
can a team put someone on waviers and then take him off if they dont' like the team that wants him?
you can tell that the government has their hands in baseball... they always muddle things up.

Even though a team places a player on waivers they still retain his rights and they do not like the offer they can pull the player back. It is different from giving a player his unconditional release. Then anyone can go after this player and not give up anything.
Andruw Jones, Manny Ramirez and David Wells are a couple of high priced vets placed on waivers. This players usually have big contracts that noone wants other than big market teams. After a player is claimed their is 48 hr window to work a deal or the team that has the players rights will pull him back.
Also contending teams will claim players as a blocking move so that a rival will not get a good player.
This concludes todays lesson on baseball.

that makes a little more sense..... but it's still tecnically trading.
why doesn't baseball just move their deadline back a few months and get rid of all this bullshit?
baseball is no longer america's pasttime. the only reason i turn a baseball game on is to take a good nap.
