THE NEWS
Eleven-time Pro Bowl left tackle Willie Roaf has announced his retirement, less than three months after confirming he would return for a 14th NFL season. According to the Kansas City Star, lingering hamstring and knee problems were instrumental in the decision. "I guess they want me to reconsider," Roaf told the Star. "I'm solid on retiring."
Our View
Of course the Chiefs want him to reconsider. When Roaf missed six games last season with a hamstring injury, their offense scored three fewer points, rushed for 15 fewer yards, and threw for 40 less yards per game. Trent Green was hurried, Tony Gonzalez was forced to help pass protect, and there were fewer holes in the running game. This is huge news for the top of the draft board, where Larry Johnson is vying with Shaun Alexander and LaDainian Tomlinson for the No.1 overall pick in fantasy football. Head coach Herm Edwards told the Star that the first team will now feature Jordan Black and Kyle Turley at left and right tackle, respectively.

The News
Pro Bowl guard Will Shields suffered a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs' exhibition loss to the Giants and was sporting a protective boot on his left foot at practice. "I don't know if he's going to play this week or not," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards told the Kansas City Star. Edwards added that Shields would "absolutely" be ready for the regular season opener. "He hasn't missed a game in 13 years," teammate Brian Waters noted to the Star. "I don't expect an ankle sprain will hold him out of any games."
Our View
The Chiefs are already without tackle Willie Roaf, who retired, and only now are getting Waters back on the other side of the line. Meanwhile, Larry Johnson has averaged two yards per carry this preseason. Though it's not time to hit the panic button, LJ's perch atop the fantasy rankings has to at least be coming under scrutiny; after all, a large part of the Chiefs' ground game success has been attributed to their line play.
